Lighting the fire determines the entire combustion process. If you light it incorrectly, the firewood will smolder, there will be a lot of smoke, and the chimney will become sooted more quickly.
What to do first?
✅ Open the air dampers - combustion requires a lot of air, especially during start-up.
✅ Use dry firewood - wet firewood burns poorly, smokes, and pollutes the chimney.
Lighting the fire from above (recommended method):
- Place larger pieces of firewood on the bottom.
- Stack a layer of thinner crackers on top of them.
- Light the kindling or matches on top.
- Leave some air between the firewood – it helps the flame spread.
Once the fire is lit, the dampers can be pulled slightly closer, but do not close them completely - combustion must be active until the fireplace reaches operating temperature.
Practical advice: never burn just one piece of wood – you need at least 2-3 pieces to burn to create enough heat and air circulation to support the process.
👉 Once you start the fire correctly, you will enjoy clean heat and a beautiful flame.
