How to clean and maintain a fireplace and wood-burning stove?

For a fireplace or stove to last a long time and operate safely, proper maintenance is essential. Even a few millimeters of soot can reduce the efficiency of the device, and a neglected chimney poses a fire hazard. We share Tolvi's tips on how to maintain your fireplace and wood-burning stove - from daily tasks to periodic servicing.

✅ Daily maintenance – simple and effective

You can do the daily maintenance yourself. It doesn't require expensive equipment or complex skills.

Cleaning soot from the glass. Many models from Jøtul and other manufacturers have an Air Wash system that keeps the glass cleaner during burning. If the glass gets sooted, you can easily clean it with a little ash: moisten a paper towel, dip it in the ash and gently wipe the glass - environmentally friendly and effective.

Ash removal. Don't overdo it - a thin layer of ash should remain on the bottom of the fireplace or stove. It insulates the bottom from the hot fire and makes it easier to start a new fire.

Safe disposal of ashes. Always put ashes in metal buckets with lids. Even after several days, ashes can retain embers - so they should not be put in the trash or compost.

✅ Periodic maintenance – once a year

• Check the internal parts of your fireplace or stove at least once a year.
• Remove the inner panels and check their condition. If they are cracked or worn, they need to be replaced.
• Check the gaskets (cords) around the door and glass. Worn gaskets should be replaced - otherwise air will enter the combustion chamber where it is not needed.
• Clean the soot. Use a brush to clean the soot from the combustion chamber to keep it clean and efficient.

✅ Chimney maintenance – a guarantee of safety

Regarding the frequency of fireplace and chimney cleaning, we recommend that you consult the Lithuanian fire safety standards or consult a certified chimney sweep. Regular chimney cleaning is necessary to prevent the accumulation of flammable soot, which can ignite.
